Dates – The tree of life
The date palm is one of the oldest cultivated plants of mankind. The United Arab Emirates is one of the largest date growing areas. Dates are a symbol of life and hospitality. In all good hotels, dates are served as a welcome in the lobby or in the hotel room.
The date palm, the “tree of life”, provides food, wood and fuel. For the nomads in earlier times, the tree was indispensable for survival.
In addition to protein, dates provide important nutrients in concentrated form, fibre, vitamins and minerals. It has been scientifically proven that people could live exclusively on water and dates without developing deficiency symptoms.
The fruits promote good digestion due to the high dietary fibre. The date is also said to have healing properties. It is used against inflammation of the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat and also against sore throats.
The shelf life is at least 6 months if stored in a cool and dry place.
